The other day I was walking right outside my home with my small dog. Several huge dogs came running up and tried to get to my small dog. The owner is yelling that they are friendly but it certainly did not seem that way to me or my dog. The dog did scratch me several time before the owner came and dragged their dogs off of us. It could have been worst. If you have any questions about dog bites or animal attacks call Attorney Todd Bissell for a free consultation at 916 458-4244 serving Folsom & Sacramento metro area.

Sacramento Dog Bite

Why is it that so many people walk their dogs with out a leash, they will often tell you, "They are friendly" and the next thing you know their "dog" or "dogs" are running at you at full speed! Most of the time the results end good, where their dog or dogs are friendly. But this is not always the case, there have been times where their dog was not friendly to me or my dog. When dogs get out of control and attack the results can be pretty serious, by the time the owner catches up with his or her dog the damage is often done. If you or some one you know has been attacked by a dog please call Injury Attorney Todd Bissell at 916-458-4244 for a free consultation.

A Mastor with No Control

Have you ever been out on a walk and see someone supposedly walking their dog, but it's really the dog walking their master. These dogs occasionally can be very protective of their owners; a simple step the wrong way or anything done that may startle the dog can set it into defense mode cause it to attack and bite. This isn't the dogs fault, it's their masters for not properly training their dog. In this type of situation people can push it off as "just an accident", and avoid an financial compensation. This is unjust! If someone carelessly drives their vehicle causing an accident they are entirely at fault. It is the same way with dogs. If you have been bit by a dog it may be a good idea to contact an attorney with experience in the area of dog attacks. If you are in the greater Sacramento area there is no better choice than Todd S. Bissell. Todd has several years experience dealing with animal attack cases and you can be sure when Todd Bissell is working for you that you will get all that you deserve. But you never thought it was dangerous. Until one day when you are riding by on your bike and there it comes full force to attack you. This can be a very traumatic experience and depending on the condition of the dog, life threatening. This is not your fault or even the dogs fault, it is the owner of the dog who is responsible. And they should be the one to pay for hospital visits and/or other expenses. If you have been bitten by a dog give Todd Bissell a call at 916 458-4244. A more recent study showed that 1,000 Americans per day are treated in emergency rooms as a result of dog bites. In 2007 there were 33 fatal dog attacks in the USA. Most of the victims who receive medical attention are children, half of whom are bitten in the face. Dog bite losses exceed $1 billion per year, with over $300 million paid by homeowners insurance. Read More

4.5 million Americans are bitten by dogs each year

4.5 million Americans are bitten by dogs each year, and one in five dog bites results in injuries that require medical attention. There are ways to make dog bites less likely and to help prevent children from being bitten by dogs. Almost one in five of those who are bitten :a total of 885,000: require medical attention for dog bite-related injuries. In 2006, more than 31,000 people underwent reconstructive surgery as a result of being bitten by dogs, from cdc.gov. Questions? Dogs as pack animals will often seek to dominate others in their pack or family (acquire more status and authority) if they feel they are able. A dog that seeks to dominate may use aggression as a means to elevate its perceived power and authority, or to make others respect its wishes and not challenge it. Pet owners are generally encouraged to not allow a dog to become overly dominant due to the aggressive behavior that may result. Dominance may include "pushy" behavior, refusal to show respect or obedience to humans, attempted "ownership" of high status locations such as beds, sofas, or doorways, and in general, any type of behavior the animal sees as furthering a dominant social role.

Fear and self-defense. Like humans, dogs react when fearful, and may feel driven to attack out of self defense, even when not in fact being "attacked". Speed of movement, noises, objects or specific gestures such as raising an arm or standing up may elicit a reaction. Many rescued dogs have been abused, and in some dogs, specific fears of men, women, skin coloring, and other features that recall past abusers, are not uncommon. A dog that feels cornered or without recourse may attack the human who is threatening or attacking it. A dog may also perceive a hand reached out toward its head as an attempt to gain control of the dog's neck via the collar, which if done to a wary dog by a stranger can easily provoke a bite, from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

Failure To Follow Up Promptly

#9 Fail To Follow Up Promptly With Necessary Medical Care. Most ER or Urgent care doctors will advise you to follow up with your family doctor if you continue to feel symptoms after a few days. Do so. If you do not, any insurance company, and likely any juror will conclude that you are fine. If you are not fine, you need to be treated. Studies show that accident victims who treated aggressively after an accident healed better and quicker than those who waited around thinking that they would get better on their own. By the time that you realize that you are not healing, you may have worsened your injury and damaged your claim. FAIL TO REPORT EVERY ACHE AND PAIN TO THE DOCTOR. Do not overlook or dismiss any of your symptoms no matter how small. Report every ache and pain to every body part involved in the accident to the emergency room doctor or urgent care physician. If your primary complaint is neck pain, do not fail to report a sore elbow that slammed into the driver's door. Your neck may heal in a few months, but you may also need an elbow surgery six months after the accident. If you have not reported it until your neck heals, surely the other driver's insurance company, and likely any jury at trial, will not connect the dots and find that the elbow was hurt in the accident. Dogs of all sizes have mauled and killed humans, although large dogs are capable of inflicting more damage quickly. - Wikipedia

If you or a loved one has been hurt by a dog or other animal attack please call Attorney Todd Bissell at 916 458-4244.

Sacramento Dog Attacks

Dog attacks are attacks on humans by feral or domestic dogs. Dog attacks often occur because of the close proximity of dogs to people, and such attacks have become the focus of increasing media and public attention in the late 20th and early 21st centuries. It is estimated that two percent of the US population, 4.7 million people, are bitten each year. In the 1980s and 1990s the US averaged 17 fatalities per year, while in the 2000s this has increased to 26. 77% of dog bites are from the pet of family or friends, and 50% of attacks occur on the dog owner's property. - Wikipedia

If you or a loved one has been hurt by a dog or other animal attack please call Personal Injury Attorney Todd Bissell at 916 458-4244.

Study: Chihuahuas most likely to bite

By Suzanne Sparhawk Sunday, August 16, 2009

This country celebrates National Dog Bite Prevention Week every year in May. During that time various organizations post helpful tips on how to protect yourself and your children from being bitten, along with a variety of graphic stories about individuals who had been attacked by dogs. Generally, we see nothing about the simple prevention methods of training and socializing dogs, or training children to interact safely with them.

Grass Valley Dog Bite

Suddenly he (the dog) was running at me. He darted forward and grabbed at the back of my left leg. I felt fear, as sharp as the pain behind my knee, and just as suddenly the dog ran away.
If you or a loved one has been hurt by a dog or other animal attack please call Attorney Todd Bissell at 916 458-4244.

climbed the stairs, a newspaper offering in my hand. As I reached the front door and pressed the bell to its left, the dog came out from the garage of the split level lot. It barked once and ran up the hill toward me. My husband was waiting in the truck about 30 feet away, and it seemed likely that the front door would open to safety before I could reach him.

I didn't really think the dog would bite me, anyway.

Suddenly he was running at me. He darted forward and grabbed at the back of my left leg. I felt fear, as sharp as the pain behind my knee, and just as suddenly the dog ran away.

The woman opened her door, smiling, to find me hunched over in tears as my husband ran up the sidewalk. “Your dog bit her!” He looked as scared as I felt and the woman's smile turned to shock and concern. The newspaper lay on the cement step, and I noticed the Best Buy ad had fallen out and scattered at just about the same time I saw the dark wet spots on the back leg of my jeans.

“It could just be from the dog's saliva,” I think I said that a couple of times.

I was at least as much frightened as I was in pain, and my jeans were still intact, and I still couldn't believe that after 41 years of being nervous around strange dogs, I had just stood there and let one bite me.

We should never even have been there. Delivering papers was certainly not my dream. I have a 44-hour a week job, and my husband and I make a pretty decent living between us.

Well, we did. But the government took all our money and spent it on a war we didn't want and a bailout we didn't approve, and some of it disappeared to places we'll never be told about.

Then the state of California added its contribution by not passing a budget (for how many months?) and making its own stupid mistakes (which I will not enumerate as I am watching my blood pressure).

Then, in a classic example of the trickle-down effect, the city of Sacramento laid off and furloughed countless unsuspecting and, for the most part, hardworking employees — one of whom is my husband.

Our federal, state, and local government worked in concert to shatter the lives of so many honest, tax-paying citizens. Therefore, my husband and I were delivering newspapers six nights a week from midnight to 4 a.m.

Someone had taken this lady's paper, and because I know how much I like to sit with my coffee and newspaper on a Saturday morning, and because we were going to go into town anyway, and because I thought that if we were nice to this lady and brought her a another paper, she just might give us a tip the next time she paid, I had been in the wrong place at the wrong time.

“Come inside,” she said. “Let me get you some shorts.”

She seemed like a nice lady, and I felt bad about intruding on her home and dropping her paper and letting her dog bite me.

“If I could just use your bathroom for a minute, so I can see if it's bleeding,” I said.

I was tearful and apologetic, and she ushered me through her bedroom and into the bathroom, grabbing a pair of black knit shorts along the way. I intended to pull down my pants, check for bleeding, pull them back up, and get out of her house, so that we could all continue on with our Saturday plans. But as I carefully lowered my jeans I saw first black and blue, then blood, then what appeared to be a hole behind my knee.

I wasn't getting out of this one so easily.

I was reluctant to wear shorts in general, let alone a pair that had been handed to me by a stranger. But the decision had been taken out of my hands. There was no way I was getting my pants back up over the mess behind my knee, and my husband was at the door asking if I was OK and telling me to let him look at it.

The tears that had barely subsided took over again as real pain began to set in, and I came out of the bathroom to submit to examination. I hobbled over to the dining room table as the poor woman came at me with peroxide and cotton balls. My husband, wearing an expression composed of equal parts concern, anger, and what looked like guilt, took one look at it and announced we were going to the emergency room.

The woman, who seemed genuinely concerned, assured us she'd pay the bill.

A younger man, her son, I assume, followed us out to the truck repeatedly saying he'd take care of it, and we wouldn't say anything, would we? He'd pay extra and the dog was 9 years old and we should just go to urgent care instead of the hospital and don't say anything about the dog, OK?

I wasn't sure at what point he'd shown up as I had been a little preoccupied with my mangled leg. I felt bad for the guy, but after the first couple of times he asked us to keep it quiet I began to wonder if this had happened before.

I wasn't looking to get anyone in trouble, but really? I had just been attacked, I had a hole in the back of my leg, and bits of my own flesh were stuck to the back of my calf.

My husband's unemployment pays almost half what he used to make. Still, it's more than he can make at any job available up here.

Our local want ads consist of eight to 10 jobs that either nobody wants or nobody is qualified for. A paper route seemed like a good idea — a good interim plan until we could come up with a better one. My husband and I could help each other, he'd still get his unemployment, and my parents could stop paying our mortgage. Who really needs to sleep anyway?

I would leave California if I could at this point. But we both grew up in this town, and it's our home. We have family here, and this is where our children go to school. Our home isn't just any house, it's the house I grew up in, so it's not like we can just leave everything behind.

I love it here, and I hate it here.

We work hard and we raise our children and we pay our taxes and our elected officials have pissed it all away. Pissed away our money, our jobs, our futures.

So, here I am in bed with my stitched up knee elevated – pumped full of antibiotics and painkillers. I'm hoping the dog doesn't have rabies, and I don't get a nasty infection, and my knee isn't permanently damaged, and the owner pays the bills like she said she would.

My wonderful husband is taking care of me, but when he looks at me, his face is guilt-stricken because he thinks it should have been him, or he should have been able to stop it, or we would never have been there if he hadn't lost his job.

I look at him, guilt-stricken, because I can't make him understand that it isn't his fault, and because the paper route was my brilliant idea.

Andrea Sarah Davis is a 35-year Grass Valley resident. The Union Grass Valley CA Saturday, July 18, 2009
